"You've got to argue, you've got to debate. Here's what happens to a good idea when it's debated: it grows, it refines. Sometimes it even becomes spectacular." Jim Rohn
When I came across this quote this morning, I felt the spark to share it and my thoughts that soon followed.
In the past I've been the sort of person that avoided discussions/debates - for several reasons. First, unconsiously I felt that what I believe is right for me (my reality) , and isn't necessarily right for someone else (your reality) so why debate. In the past couple of years, the more I've read about how our brains see the world, I've become conscious of this truth. But there's more to it now...
Second - like a lot of people, I avoided because of the "negative" aspect of arguing. But that comes partly from teachings from my parents/grandparents (who rarely argue) and from blows with my brother (we did a lot of verbal abuse to each other when we were teenagers).
Third - In the past I've had problems communicating my thoughts into words which leads to frustration. I still do, but I'm working on it.
Fourth - What is XXX going to think about what I'm saying? Will they think I'm an idiot for discussing it? Should I talk about such a sensitive subject? - sound familiar? That tiny voice that says let sleeping dogs lie or telling you to worry about what other people may think about you.
Now, I've come to realise and to a certain degree at least, welcome discussions for what they can be - a way to further expand my mind, challenge beliefs that for the most part are based on childhood experiences or teachings from others around me. It gives me a glimpse into another's reality. And when my intuition snags an idea and I start to discuss it and run with it - imagine the possibilities that open! What someone else may think about my intentions, or if it's a stupid idea, really isn't too much of an issue any more. This is my reality I'm testing - I'm not right or wrong. Same goes for everyone else.
It's one of the reasons I started this network, and why I enjoy joining sites like Powerful Intentions.
