It was announced this past week that 911 emergency service is now available in most of the Regional District Kitimat Stikine area.

From the Regional District website:

"All 911 calls generated within the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine 911 Service Area will be answered at the Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) operated by the Prince George RCMP Operational Communications Centre (OCC). Police calls will be handled be the RCMP OCC. Ambulance calls will be connected to the BC Ambulance Service Dispatch Centre in Kamloops. Fire calls will be connected to the Prince George Fire Operations Control Centre (FOCC) which will dispatch the 17 fire departments in the region participating in the Regional District Kitimat-Stikine 911 system.

The enhanced 911 emergency response system consists of dedicated telephone, radio and satellite communications technology for call answering and emergency dispatch of police, ambulance and fire departments.

The 911 system will serve Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine residents living in the areas of Kitimat, Terrace and the Hazeltons from Kitwanga to Moricetown and in Stewart. Approximately 36,000 residents – 90% of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine population and about 50,000 km2 – 50% of the geographic area of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine will have 911 service."
