BC Hydro is once again supporting the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative Earth Hour and encouraging participation from communities, organizations, businesses and individuals. Last year in B.C. alone through the efforts of British Columbians, the one hour of one evening campaign saved 125mega-watt hours of energy. What does that number mean? That is enough energy to power 4,000 homes in B.C. for an entire year. Imagine what we could accomplish if we lived that way on a regular basis. The initiative asks participants to turn off unnecessary lights and appliances like TV’s and computers that are not in use at the time.
To date for this year’s effort 931 cities in 80 countries have already committed to VOTE EARTH for Earth Hour 2009, as part of the worlds first global election between Earth and global warming. On March 28 you can VOTE EARTH by switching off your lights for one hour. Or you can vote global warming by leaving your lights on.
The results of the election are being presented at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. We want one billion votes for Earth, to tell world leaders that we have to take action against global warming.
Your community can show it’s commitment by signing up and you will get useful tips and tools to reduce your carbon footprint everyday. By committing to Earth Hour your community will be shown on the world map and recognized as taking action in the fight against global warming.
Local businesses can also join the fight and in return receive recognition as they will be listed among those companies committed to making a better world by starting locally.
Individuals can have a major impact by taking action on the night of this year’s Earth Hour campaign. You can show your commitment by joining as an individual participant and turning off any unnecessary lights and energy consuming items that are not in use.
When do we take action? Earth Hour this year is Saturday 28 March 2009 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Join us and say “It’s lights out for Global Warming”.
